How the bill is split

The tip is worked out on the bill total and added to it. For an even split, the total is divided by the number of people and each share is rounded up to the cent, or to the next euro if you choose. For an uneven split, each person pays what they had plus an equal part of the shared items, and the tip is added on each person's part.

Example. Five friends have a bill of €186 and leave a 10% tip of €18.60. The total is €204.60, or €40.92 each. Rounded up to €41.00 each, they put in €205.00, which leaves €0.40 extra for the tip.

Questions

Do you have to tip in Ireland?
No. Tipping in Irish restaurants is optional. Around 10% to 15% is common for table service when you are happy with it. Tips are less usual in pubs and for counter service.
What is a service charge?
Some restaurants add a service charge to the bill, often 10% to 12.5%, usually for larger groups. The menu or bill has to show it. If a service charge is already on the bill, you do not need to add a tip on top, so choose "None" here.
Do staff get the tips?
Under the Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Act 2022, employers must pass tips paid by card on to staff, display their policy on how tips are shared, and say whether a service charge goes to staff. Tips cannot be used to make up basic pay.
How does the uneven split work?
Each person pays for what they had, plus an equal part of anything not named, such as shared starters or a bottle of wine for the table. The tip is added to each person in proportion. If three people spend €30, €20 and €20 of a €100 bill with a 10% tip, the €30 left is shared, so they pay €44.00, €33.00, €33.00.
Why does rounding up leave extra?
Rounding each share up to the next euro means the group pays a little more than the bill. The extra is shown so you can leave it as part of the tip or give it back.
