How the conversions work

Every imperial unit here has an exact metric definition, set by international agreement in 1959 for length and weight, and by the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 for the gallon. The converter multiplies or divides by these numbers, so typing on either side gives the same answer.

  • 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg; 1 stone = 14 pounds = 6.35029318 kg; 1 ounce = 28.349523125 g
  • 1 inch = 2.54 cm; 1 foot = 30.48 cm; 1 mile = 1.609344 km
  • 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 litres; 1 UK pint = 0.56826125 litres; 1 UK fluid ounce = 28.4130625 ml
  • °C = (°F minus 32) x 5 / 9
  • litres per 100 km = 282.481 / miles per gallon (UK)

Example. 11 stone 4 pounds is 11 x 14 + 4 = 158 pounds. 158 x 0.45359237 = 71.67 kg. Going back, 71.67 / 0.45359237 = 158 pounds, which is 11 stone (154 pounds) and 4 pounds.

Questions

How many kilograms are in a stone?
One stone is 14 pounds, which is exactly 6.35029318 kg. To turn kilograms into stones, divide by 6.35029318: 70 kg is 11.02 stone, or 11 stone and 0.3 pounds.
Is an Irish pint the same as a US pint?
No. Ireland and the UK use the imperial pint of 568 ml (0.56826125 litres exactly). A US pint is smaller, at about 473 ml. A pint of stout in an Irish pub is an imperial pint.
How do I convert mpg to litres per 100 km?
Divide 282.48 by the miles per gallon. A car that does 50 mpg uses about 5.6 litres per 100 km. This uses UK gallons; US gallons are smaller, so US mpg figures are lower for the same car.
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Take away 32, then multiply by 5 and divide by 9. 68°F is 20°C. To go the other way, multiply by 9, divide by 5 and add 32.
What are speed limits in Northern Ireland in km/h?
Northern Ireland signs speed limits in miles per hour. 30 mph is about 48 km/h, 60 mph is about 97 km/h and 70 mph is about 113 km/h. Road signs in the Republic are in km/h.
